At 1st Financial Federal Credit Union, we’re committed to helping the communities we serve. We know the best way to change a community is to focus on the future. Keeping in mind our strategic intents to support job training and education programs in St. Louis, we are so proud to be in partnership with the STL Youth Jobs and College Kids children’s savings account programs.
STL Youth Jobs
STL Youth Jobs trains our youth to be ready for the jobs of tomorrow through individualized career assessment, financial literacy and job readiness training, employment experience and continuing career support. Their jobs programs are designed to create transformative employment opportunities for youth while giving them the training and support they need to become the workforce of the future. This partnership with STL Youth Jobs embodies our core purpose of helping people achieve their financial dreams through financial literacy and employment resources.
1st Financial has partnered with this important program serving Youth Build, Ferguson Forward, SLATE Youth Workforce Programs and the 24-Hour Workforce High School since 2014. Each of these programs have allowed 1st Financial to provide access to comprehensive financial literacy, direct deposit, free checking and a free debit card to every youth between the ages of 16 and 24 in the program.
Since 2014, 2,490 free checking and savings accounts have been issued and more than 900 Financial literacy classes have been taught through the STL Youth Jobs program.
Understanding how a generation of citizens, fully educated and prepared for their future can change the landscape of financial stability, the City of St. Louis Treasurer’s Office created the College Kids savings account program which we proudly support.
College Kids gives every kindergarten student in a St. Louis public and charter school a deposit only savings account with a $50 deposit for the sole use of higher education. Research shows that children with less than $500 saved are three times more likely to enroll in college and four times more likely to graduate from college than children without college savings accounts.
Since 2015, 10,205 College Kids savings accounts have been opened for families in St. Louis with more than $640,000 now set aside for families across St. Louis to use for college.
There is still so much to be done and we encourage our members and community members to stay involved. When we work together, when we cooperate, that’s when the real change happens.
Be the change,
